Because right now I am teaching in an Immersion School, students are receiving a diverse education in Russian, Spanish, French and Chinese culture. On this page I placed pictures how I used diversity in a regular public school. This is my student teacher experience in Beltsville Academy.
Bringing Diversity into the Classroom:
Since I am Russian, I decided to share my culture with the students.
We read a story "Thunder Cake" by Patricia Polacco. In this story, a girl is afraid of the thunderstorm. Her grandmother tries to to distract the girl by baking thunder cake together. Later, they ate this cake and drunk tea from a samovar. Samovar is the Russian tea kettle that is used to boil water for tea only outside. Then it's brought inside to enjoy the tea. |
We are relating the picture of a samovar from the story to a real thing.

I also used my knowledge of some Spanish words to interact with my Hispanic students. When I said something in Spanish, they liked it.
In the social Studies unit students learned about Native American people and their lives. We watched a little bit of movie "Pocahontas". After that we showed the real pictures of her. Some students and my mentor brought artifacts to share with the class. We also created Totem Poles with the students which we placed on display.
Here are a few creations of my students work.
